Windows 7: How to Fix "This Copy of Windows is not genuine" error

Abstract: The main reason for this error is you are not using genuine Operating System unless you have an official copy from the Microsoft Windows. In case of pirated version of Windows this is the first error you’ll get each time when you boot up your computer.

You are getting error “this copy of windows is not genuine”, because there is an updated file installed on your computer (KB971033) which detects windows OS product status. Follow the procedure described below to remove this error message from your machine.

  1. Remove KB971033 from the system
    • Control Panel -> Windows Update -> Click on view installed updates
    • Restart the computer after un-installing the KB971033 update

  1. Rearm the Windows OS using SLMGR command
    • Open command prompt as administrator mode and run either of the two below commands
    • SLMGR -REARM (SLMGR is Windows software licensing management tool). It’s VB script file located under Windows/Systm32 folder. In case of an error message, then try SLMGR /REARM instead SLMGR -REARM.

Maximum allowed number of rearms has been exceeded

Follow the steps described below in case if you either start seeing the message again or get the rearm maximum allowed is reached.

  1. Open registry (Regedit)
  2. Follow this path now: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> WindowsNT -> Current version -> SoftwareProtectionPlatform.
  3. Now, look for SkipRearm and click on modify, then change its value data from 0 to 1.
  4. Restart computer (the error may disappear as soon as you change the value, if you have executed the SLMGR command earlier and message didn't get clear)
